I’m still not completely sure what Newsy story I would like to cover, but I found a story that was interesting and controversial . I watched a video titled “Teacher In Hot Water ‘Over Jews Are Evil Assignment’ and it was just that. A high school English teacher in New York created a writing assignment to “challenge” the students. The teacher asked students to “Watch Nazi propaganda and by writing an essay convincing me to be loyal to the Nazi’s , how Jews are evil and the source of Germany’s problems.” The video shows the Superintendent apologizing on behalf and said she was in horror. The goal of the assignment was to challenge students to write a persuasive essay with limited information.I agree with what a New York writer wrote, that the teacher should have worded the essay assignment differently and/or had used a different topic having the same goal in mind. The news reporter Logan Tittle said that a third of the classroom boycotted the essay and that the board has yet to reach a disciplinary action for the teacher. I understand what the goal was and how the teacher was attempting to challenge the class with such a controversial topic. I think this would be great to talk about because in general here in the U.S. we do not support Nazi’s although they are still around. Like I said before, I agree with the N.Y. writer in that they could have worded in differently to where it did not sound prejudice and bias.
I’ve never been to Newsy.com before today. I think it’s cool how they have videos for news around the world and then specifically the U.S. I watched the video about the Supreme Court ruling on Gay Marriage Ban. I wish there was more information on exactly the argument and hear it on both sides. I know only a handful of people are allowed into the court, but I would really like to know what’s going on with that case through Newsy. I watched two more videos. One about the ‘Breaking Bad’ script that was allegedly stolen from actor’s car. I thought it was interesting that they couldn’t find the stolen script and the theft also took an Ipad. I found the third video under ‘science’, it was about a two-headed Bull Shark in the Gulf of Mexico. A fisherman discovered in my cutting open the belly of a Bull Shark. I found it fascinating because the two-headed shark had two brains, two hearts, and sharing one body. They said the embryo wasn’t finished developing and if the shark was born, the two-headed baby wouldn’t have survived because the body would be too small. Some are blaming the BP oil spill, but a scientist said not to jump to that conclusion without evidence. I think Newsy is very informative. I also read the Newsy Blog about teens using cellphones because “everyone is doing it.” I think teens do it because it’s a main source of communication and nowadays has so many functions along with apps.
I’ve never been to Patch.com before. I am really impressed. I like how you get to choose a state and then a specific location. Everything is organized and put into categories. I went to San Francisco on Patch.com and on their home page you can select to read Real Estate, Directory, and news and events. You could even choose what kind of news you want to read. I selected “Police & Fire” and read the article Sentencing Set For A Man Convicted of Sexually assaulting South City Hotel Maid. It was about a man who worked at the hotel and felt up a maid. The maid was afraid to come forward because she had an expired Tourist Visa from El Salvador. The man was convicted guilty. I would have liked to know more about what happened to the maid regarding possible deportation and how long was the man sentenced.
I searched the location of Brandon, Florida. The first article that pops up on the home page is an article about the sink hole. I’ve been hearing bits and pieces about the sink hole all over the news and how it swallowed a man whole. I read this article because I wanted to know more about this story and what’s going on. It seems that no one knows what exactly is causing these sinkholes although, one reader suggests that it’s due to aquifers and springs.
I also read in Brandon’s news in the Opinion article section, Boy Scouts’ Gay Ban: Should it Go? It’s great to know that 55 percent to 33 percent want the ban to end. Some of the comments people left were upsetting. In Florida there are tons of homosexuals so banning them for the boy scouts is immoral and prejudice not to mention, it will alienate a lot of people.. I’ve signed a petition before to end the ban.
Away with the old, and in with the new! There’s talk of a new St. Pete pier. If the decision falls through completely, the new pier would be designed by famous architect Michael Maltzan and his design named “The Lens”. The decision was made unanimously by The St.Pete Pier Competition Jury. According to Channel 10 News, the new pier would include a restaurant out on the pier and a waterfront restaurant.”One of the two bridges leading to the Lens will be able to handle service vehicles and a tram. That makes it possible to have a restaurant and access for a lot more people.” The new pier would also have a marina where you could rent a kayak or paddle board. Because of the new design, the pier would enclose a circular bay inside the loop of the new pier. The website for the St.Pete organization states that The Pier and St.Pete asked that the design to address goals such as honoring the history of St.Pete. But of course nothing is too good to be true; as far as cost goes, the new pier cost would not exceed over $50 million. The predicted cost is a huge concern for the city council members.
Did someone order chicken with a side of homophobia? Dan Cathy the president of Chick-Fil-A, a well-known christian ran fast food chain, spoke out in July about his personal stance on what is considered a family unit. “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family owned business, a family led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” Cathy is quoted as saying. On Wednesday July 25, Chick-Fil-A had there national Eat at Chick-Fil-A Day, having broken record-sales that day. Two days later, gay rights activists took a stand by holding a “kiss day” at Chick-fil-A outlets nationwide Friday. There is a huge debate on whether this act from Chick-Fil-A crossed the line between free speech or simply discrimination. Even though Chick-Fil-A is a Christian ran business, they participated in supporting the killings of homosexuals in Uganda. Chick-Fil-A Corporates supported the Family Research Council. In 2010, the FRC spent $25,000 lobbying U.S. Congress not to condemn Uganda’s “Kill The Gays” bill, which would establish life imprisonment as the punishment for being in a same-sex relationship and the death penalty for aggravated homosexuality. All together, Chick-Fil-A has spent $5 million supporting groups trying to stop gay marriage. I would like to do my civic journalism paper on this topic concerning Chick-Fil-A and anti-same-sex groups. I think everyone would like to know the whole truth.
My story is about a man named Carrol “Carrie” West. He works in Ybor at MC Film with his partner Mark. Carrie is president of the GaYBOR District and sometimes goes by the nick-name “the mayor”, along with many other groups he’s a part of. He is a USF alumni with a post-graduate degree in Public Administration and two Bachelor Degrees. I thought this interview would benefit H.C.C. students whose home campus is Ybor. MC Film is right next to Ybor H.C.C. I also thought that interviewing an accomplished public figure would encourage students to stay in school and not give up what they wish to accomplish. I think this story will interest those who are curious about operating a business, GaYBOR/Ybor, the LGBT community, and the history of the store. My goal was to find out information about Carrie and the history of his making of this store. To gather information for this interview, I video recorded and took notes during the interview. I also went onto his website MCFilm.co and his personal Facebook page.
Before conducting an interview, I brought along with me a video camcorder and a notebook. I didn’t want to constantly be writing while the individual was answering my questions, I thought it would too intimidating so I brought the camcorder to video tape but to also record audio. I wanted to be able to go back and hear and visualize as well. I selected a man named Carrie West because he is an important man in Ybor and the gay community. I knew he had a great political background and his store had a history of it’s own. When I first scheduled the interview, I came fifteen minutes early and he never showed. The second time I rescheduled it, the individual was there but forgot about the interview completely. He still allowed me to interview him and record him. Another challenge I faced was that the interviewee wanted to advertise the merchandise in his store and direct the whole interview. I wouldn’t let him look at the questions and answers I wrote down on my paper. I don’t think he fully understood that I was just using it for audio, even though I informed him the use for it.
